Great Plains:

Attwater Prairie Chicken NWR  The last place of the rarest bird?

Caprock Canyons State Park  The remnant of the great southern bison herd resides here. 

Chase Lake NWR / Chase Lake Prairie Project  The largest prairie project of the them all also contains the largest American white pelican colony.

Coteau Prairie WPA / Lostwood NWR  The largest contiguous prairie pothole complex contains
a northern mixed grass prairie wilderness area.  
 
Crescent Lake NWR  A remote refuge containing the rare and beautiful blowout penstemon.  

Gene Howe WMA  A classic piece of research on the Bobwhite quail took place here.

Ivan Boyd Prairie Preserve  John Brown and the Santa Fe Trail are tied in to this fine example of a tallgrass prairie.  

Rock Creek Station  Rock Creek Station has some western lore associated with it that is possibly more compelling than its botany.

Spirit Mound Historic Prairie  Spirit Mound was visited by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804 on a day that proved much too hot for dogs and evil little spirits.

 

Midwest:

John Latch State Park  John Latch, now largely forgotten, helped to preserve some of the hill prairies of the upper Mississippi in 1920s and 1930s.  

Liberty Prairie / Oak Openings  A large prairie and wetland complex that is adjoined by a surburban community where the bluegrass lawn is well on its way to becoming an endangered ecosystem.

Milller Woods oak savanna  The birthplace of American ecology was along the southeast shore of Lake Michigan.

Taberville Prairie  This large prairie is full to the brim with rare plants, butterflies and grassland birds.

 

Southeast:

Myakka Island  The dry prairie is a bit of Florida beyond the beach that is seldom visited but much appreciated by those who do.

 

West:

Baskett Butte National Wildlife Refuge   High on a hill in western Oregin a tiny butterefly renews its life cycle each spring amid grasses and lupines.
